Who are we?

We are a group of Irish motorists who are fed up seeing speed traps located on some of the the safest roads in the country. We believe the main factor in deciding the location of speed traps is not to improve road safety but merely an attempt to increase the "detection rate" statistics for speeding offences and generate additional revenue for the Government.

Some Facts

A mere 1% of fatal and injury collisions occur on motorways*
Just 4% of fatal and injury collisions occur on dual carriageways*
A massive 73% of fatal collisions occur on rural roads*

So why do Gardaí concentrate the majority of their speed traps on our safest roads? Gardaí hiding in bushes with speed guns alongside our motorways and dual carriageways are an all too common sight. Garda "Gatso" vans equipped with speed detection devices parked on central medians, footpaths and cycle lanes (and causing a safety risk themselves) are not the answer to improving safety on our roads.

In the coming months the Government will licence private companies to operate speed cameras on behalf of the Gardaí and this situation can only get worse. Irishspeedtraps.com will keep a record of all known speed trap locations, both fixed and mobile. We will campaign for speed cameras to be placed only in high accident locations, to be clearly marked and have their locations publicised. This is what happens in other European countries such as the UK and France. We are strongly opposed to the current approach by the Irish Government and the Gardaí.
